Autumn is one of my favourite times of year – the colours are beautiful, the air feels fresher, and there are so many seasonal things to enjoy as a family. Whether you’re after a simple walk with the kids, a big day out, or a pumpkin patch to explore, there’s plenty happening locally. Here are some of my favourite ideas to make the most of autumn around Berkhamsted (plus a little photography treat at the end!).
Pumpkin Patches
Pumpkin picking has become such a fun tradition for families, and we’re spoilt for choice locally. A few great options to try:
-
The Pop Up Farm (St Albans / Harpenden) – A big, family-friendly patch where kids can grab a wheelbarrow and pick their own pumpkin. Lots of photo opportunities, too!
-
The Patch MK (near Milton Keynes) – Known for its themed displays and huge variety of pumpkins, it’s worth the short trip if you fancy something a bit different.
-
Rumblers Farm (near Hemel Hempstead) – A smaller, family-run patch with a welcoming feel. Great if you prefer something more low-key and local.
Autumn Walks
Sometimes the simplest days are the best – pulling on wellies, crunching through the leaves, and ending with something warm to eat or drink. Here are a few favourite local walks:
-
Ashridge Estate – A classic for autumn, with its stunning tree colours and plenty of space to run. You might spot fungi if you look carefully. Round things off with lunch at The Frithsden Arms or a hot chocolate and cake at the Ashridge House Bakehouse.
-
Tring Park – Easy trails, sweeping views, and perfect for smaller legs. Pop into Black Goo Coffee in Tring afterwards for a treat.
-
College Lake Nature Reserve (near Tring) – Gentle paths, bird hides, and lots of wildlife to discover. Handy onsite café for warming up when you’re done exploring.
Bigger Days Out
If you’re looking for something more than a quick walk, these places make a fantastic autumn day trip:
-
Mead Open Farm (Leighton Buzzard) – A brilliant mix of animals, indoor play, and seasonal pumpkin activities.
-
Willows Activity Farm (near St Albans) – Their pumpkin festival is a highlight, alongside all the usual farm fun.
-
Waddesdon Manor (near Aylesbury) – Beautiful gardens that really glow with autumn colour. They run seasonal family trails and Halloween-themed events too.
-
ZSL Whipsnade Zoo – Boo at the Zoo – Spooky fun with pumpkin carving, themed talks, and of course, the chance to see the animals.
Capture the Season – Autumn Mini Photoshoots
Of course, I couldn’t talk about autumn without mentioning one of my favourite traditions – my autumn mini shoots at Ashridge. The colours at this time of year are just magical, and minis are a simple, relaxed way to update your family photos without committing to a full session.
Sessions are short, fun, and designed to capture your family just as you are – jumping in leaves, cuddled up in cosy jumpers, or exploring the woods together.
Find out more about autumn minis here.
Autumn doesn’t last long, so it’s the perfect excuse to get outside, try something seasonal, and soak up those rich colours while they last. Whether you’re pumpkin picking, exploring Ashridge, or heading to the zoo, I hope you and your family make the most of the season.
And if you do any of these, I’d love to hear what you thought – or see your photos! You can always drop me a message or share over on Instagram: @lyndsey_abercromby_photography
