A few weeks ago the lovely Jenni came all the way from South London to Berkhamsted for some photographs for her new venture. She is running cloth nappy workshops in conjunction with BubbaHub London. Jenni is a proud cloth bum mum. Having used reusable nappies on both her 2 young children she is perfectly placed to answer any questions you may have about using them.
Normally running as face-to-face sessions in South London, Jenni’s 90 minute workshops are now available online. They give you all the information you need to make the switch and how to make cloth nappying smooth and easy.
Did you know that each baby gets through between 5000 and 7000 nappies in the 2 or 3 years before they potty train? In their first six weeks alone, your baby will churn through about 500 nappies. That’s a lot of nappies!
Keep reading for 4 great reasons to consider cloth nappies for your baby.
1. The Environment
In the UK alone we get through 500,000 tonnes of disposable nappies every year! By using cloth nappies you can dramatically reduce the amount of waste your household produces. Furthermore, switching to cloth represents a 40% saving in carbon footprint versus disposables.
2. The Cost
Cloth nappies are often thought of as being expensive, as the initial outlay can be high. But when you work the cost out how much you spend on disposable nappies it actually works out much cheaper overall. The saving is even greater if you use your nappies for more than one child. In addition, some councils offer a voucher towards the initial payment of cloth nappies. Selling your nappies once you have finished with them can both earn you some money and help another family benefit from reusable nappies.
3. Earlier Potty Training
Reusable nappies are designed so that the child has a greater awareness of when they are wet. This is generally accepted as leading to babies who regularly wear cloth nappies being ready to start potty training earlier.
4. The Cute Factor
The variety and choice of design for cloth nappies is huge! Whether your style is statement patterns or subtle shades that co-ordinate with your home decor you’re bound to be able to find a design of reusable nappy that you love.
